The devil frog is assumed to be the largest frog that ever lived. Now extinct, the devil frog, which is usually compared to the size of the beach ball, can grow up to 16 inches and weigh up to 10 pounds.

The devil frog is believed to be as aggressive as their closest living relative, the ceratophyrines. According to scientists, ceratophyrines are predators that pass time waiting for a prey and then assault anything that crosses their way. Therefore, the devil frog might have fed on lizards, small vertebrates, and maybe even young dinosaurs by utilizing its large mouth and tough jaw.

The scientific name of this ancient frog is Beelzebufo ampinga, taken from the Greek word for devil, “beelzebub”, and the Latin word “ampinga”, which means “armored”. The “armor” was meant to refer to the very noticeable cranial shield posed on its head.
